About us

John Heilprin runs Heilprin Research & Consulting. As a professional writer, editor and consultant based in Bern, Switzerland, and Arlington, Virginia, he has expertise in a wide range of policy issues at the highest levels of government, politics and science. His firm provides contractual services for prominent clients mainly in Geneva and he is founding editor of Arete News, a policy platform about international organizations.

Heilprin spent about half of his more than three-decade journalism career with The Associated Press, working in successive roles as environment writer in Washington, U.N. correspondent in New York, and chief correspondent in Geneva, where he headed the AP's bureau based at the Palais des Nations, the U.N.'s European headquarters. He also worked for the Swiss Broadcasting Corp.’s international news service, climbing the Matterhorn for a special report on the 150th anniversary of the first ascent, and for seven U.S. newspapers in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Utah. His work has appeared in hundreds of publications and reached global audiences in the billions. He produced investigative and major breaking news from four continents, covering global and U.S. politics, climate summits, and high-stakes diplomatic missions with the U.N. Secretary-General and Security Council. He won 11 awards for foreign reporting, global climate coverage and investigative work, and a Jefferson Fellowship in climate change.

He served for six years as a board director for the American Alpine Club,  heading several committees and leading an inclusive two-year effort that led to the adoption of a new mission statement that significantly boosted membership. In his first career, he spent several years working as a professional mountaineering instructor. He has gone on months-long climbing expeditions and trips in the Alps, Alaska, Nepal, Pakistan and China (K2's North Ridge). He earned a bachelor's degree in European history from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is married and has two Swiss-American sons.
